چکیده

New Hugoniot and release adiabat data for 1.8 g/cm3 lunar fines (sample, 70051) in the N 2 to 70 kbar range demonstrate that upon shock compression intrinsic crystal density (. 3.1 g/cm3) is achieved under shock stress of 15 to 20 kbar. Release adiabat determinatioc;s indicate that measurable irreversible compaction occurs upon achieving shock pressures above . k kbar. For shocks in the r y 7 to 15 kbar range, the inferred post-shock specific volumes observed decrease nearly linearly with increasing peak shock pressures. Upon shocking to ,x,15 kbar the post-shock density is approximately that of the intrinsic minerals. if the present data for 70051 are taken to be representative of the response to impact of unconsolidated regolith material on the moon, it is inferred that the formation of appreciable quantities of soil breccia can be associated with the impact of meteoroids or ejects at speeds as low as

On the Compaction and Viscous Behavior of Deep-Water Reservoirs

There have been many studies on reservoir compaction where different mechanisms being suggested as the reasons behind the integrity of unconsolidated reservoirs during production. Theory of poroelasticity is often used to evaluate the likelihood of compaction under these circumstances, but it is often failed to explain the creep behavior of unconsolidated formations. In this study, attempts are...

Electrostatic Dust Control and Collection on Planetary Surfaces

The Significance of Dust: Dust studies have already been identified as crucial components of missions to the Moon, Mars, asteroids, and Mercury over the next decade [1,2]. Detailed study of the physical and chemical nature of the fine particulate portion of regoliths of planetary bodies is a key to understanding micrometeorite bombardment and the nature of re-golith formation [e.g., 3]. The Pro...

Viscosity and Structure of a Late Lunar Magma Ocean Liquid: Implications for the Purity of Ferroan Anorthosites and the Dynamics of a Crystallizing Magma Ocean

The current paradigm argues the Moon formed after a giant impact that produced a deep lunar magma ocean (LMO). After a period of turbulent convection, the LMO experienced fractional crystallization, causing the initially peridotitic liquid to evolve to a plagioclase-saturated ferrobasalt. The lunar crust, much of which comprises 93-98% pure anorthosite [1,2], formed by flotation of positively b...

Rover Configuration for Exploring Lunar Craters

Configuration of locomotion for planetary rovers is motivated by increased interest in exploring lunar polar craters. Current rover designs cannot achieve the ascent or descent required by steep, unconsolidated lunar slopes. New designs must provide locomotive capability for steep climbing, techniques for controlling slip, and safely navigating down and along steep slopes. We propose a locomoti...

Impact of Tamper Shape on the Efficiency and Vibrations Induced During Dynamic Compaction of Dry Sands by 3D Finite Element Modeling

Dynamic compaction is a soil improvement method which has been widely used for the increase of bearing capacity through stress wave propagation during heavy tamping. The cost and time of project implementation can be effectively curtailed by developing a model that can be used in the design of dynamic compaction operations. The numerical models offered so far are mostly one or two-dimensional, ...
